Boston University School of Music

Boston University's world-renowned School of Music is the oldest degree-granting music education program in the United States. Founded in 1872, Boston University's graduate and doctoral programs prepare students for career advancement opportunities in music education. Boston University awarded the first Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education in 1955. In 1967, the School of Music co-sponsored the Tanglewood Symposium which helped to change American music education. Tanglewood continues as a summer-long symposium designed to give young artists the opportunity to learn from distinguished professionals, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2007, BU sponsored Tanglewood II in order to chart the future of music education well into the 21st Century.
