How long will it take to earn my online music education degree?

Master's Degree coursework can be completed in about 17-20 months. The Doctoral degree typically takes about 3 to 4 years.

Is this program accredited?

Yes. Boston University is regionally accredited by New England Association of Schools and Colleges - http://www.neasc.org/ and the School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music - http://nasm.arts-accredit.org/.

Importance of Regional Accreditation

Regional accreditation is the primary type of institutional accreditation in the United States. In addition, Boston University holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music, NASM, founded in 1924, is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges and universities with over 600 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials.

Institutional Membership is gained only through the peer review process of accreditation. Individual Membership is available by application.

NASM provides information to potential students and parents, consultations, statistical information, professional development; and policy analysis.

NASM has an extensive publications program.

Is online learning for me?

Students who graduate from BU's online programs received the exact same degree as students who attend classes on our campus. The diploma does not distinguish if you were an online student or a traditional campus-based student. The degree you earn is exactly the same. In fact, we strongly encourage you to attend your graduation ceremony to celebrate your accomplishments.

Online learning is ideal for working professionals because it provides the opportunity to study when it is convenient for you. How many hours per week will I need to study?

On an average, most students spend approximately 20 hours per week on their coursework. However, this can vary, depending on your personal and professional circumstances.

What is WebCT?

WebCT is a classroom-based software program that provides the instructor and student with a user-friendly environment that allows for a number of different learning experiences and environments. The features includes discussion forums, in-class mail, student presentations, online testing, posting of assignments and lectures, Internet relay chat, online grade book and many other features that an instructor may make available to the student. Not every course will have all of the same features. WebCT has been a leader in education course management software since 1995 and is the most widely used tool for providing online education.

Is BU new to online education?

No, BU developed its first series of online courses in 2001.

What are the computer requirements for participation in this program?
