PROGRAM INFORMATION
Upon acceptance to the DMA in Music Education online program, you will be assigned to a small group of students led by a course instructor and a music education facilitator. Next, you will begin interacting with this group online through message boards, chat sessions, and e-mail. This learning construct will allow you to pursue your degree in music education from anywhere - and maintain your current professional obligations.
The online DMA in Music Education consists of approximately 11 courses and a dissertation (44 credits). Coursework can be completed continuously in about 24 months. In addition to the online coursework, students attend an on-campus residency of approximately ten days to propose their dissertation topic. The writing of the dissertation is considered the final course (4 credits) and will take an additional one to two years to complete. To begin the final Doctorate in Music Education course. Students can expect the entire length of the program to typically be three to four years in length.
Your learning materials and course content for the online DMA in Music Education program will be delivered directly by a faculty instructor via the course web site. Course materials and books will be sent to your home.
After completing coursework, doctoral students will take a qualifying examination.Passing these exams enables students to embark on a ten day on campus residency where students will have access to Boston University libraries/resources, meet with faculty, participate in discussions with classmates and will leave Boston with faculty contacts and a direction for their dissertation.
Once the dissertation topic has been approved, students work independently with a faculty supervisor to research and write their dissertation.
